A large, ornamental shrub with short and broad serrated leaves and stunning, burgundy flower spikes with yellow tips, followed by chestnut-brown, bristly seed cones. The large flower spikes attract birds and insects in winter and spring, while the shrub provides shelter and nesting for the birds. In some plants, the flowers are yellow. A lovely specimen tree for the garden, and great for windbreaks and screening reaching 3-4m tall and 2-3m wide. It grows in a variety of soils including acidic or alkaline sand, sandy loam, sandy gravel, gravelly loam and clay loam, in full sun or dappled shade and tolerates light frost, strong winds and drought.
